“The Mask” by Hope Smith

(verse 1)

I saw a picture of myself yesterday

I saw the girl I thought I knew

But when I looked a little closer

I saw straight through, straight through

(pre chorus)

Blonde hair, green eyes, false smile

I wanted to be right back where she was

Blue coat, black jeans, false smile

I wish I could go back and stay for a while

(chorus)

Who am I to know who I am supposed to be

When I all see is the hurt in me

When will I be done with this race

Because all I feel is the mask on my face

(Verse two)

I saw myself in the mirror today

I saw a girl I wasn’t sure I knew

But when I looked a little closer

I wasn’t as ashamed at the view

(pre chorus)

Blonde hair, green eyes, false smile

I’m not sure I wanna be back where she was

Blue coat, black jeans, false smile

I’m not sure I wanna be back there for a while

(chorus)

Who am I to know who I am supposed to be

When I all see is the hurt in me

When will I be done with this race

Because all I feel is the mask on my face

(Verse three)

I see myself for who I am today

I see a girl I know very well

When I looked closer

I saw a girl who no longer wanted to yell

(bridge)

The mask is off

I feel less pain

Like a bottle of wine,

The trauma has aged
